My Students

I am the librarian at an inner-city, K-6 elementary school. Our school is an Expeditionary Learning (EL) school. EL involves rigorous academic work centered on compelling topics that are both interesting and relevant to the students.

We are an exceptionally high performing school and always strive to meet the diverse needs of our students and to align our teaching with our Design Principles.

Our ten Design Principles are the foundation of our school and we try to orient our lesson plans with one or more of them every day. Our younger students fully embrace these principles, especially the one I wish to focus on for this project, which is the design principle of "our Natural World".

My Project

I am the librarian of an elementary school that focuses are learning on ten Design Principles. This spring, I would love to focus on one specific Design Principle, The Natural World. My kindergarten, first and second graders love nature and they know that nature can be their teacher.

I was introduced to books by the author Yuval Zommer a while back.

Yuval Zommer has a passion for picture books and has won many awards as both an author and an illustrator for his works. His books help teach small children about the world around them and Zommer's approach is so peaceful, warm and comforting. They are a favorite of my students and the few copies I have are well worn.

It is my hope that I can acquire new Yuval Zommer books this spring and do an in-depth author study on Zommer and focus on how he uses nature to tell a story. My kids love author studies and I know they will love this particular author.
