Help me give my students sensory experiences so they are better regulated in the classroom. The Sensory Path decals will provide a fun indoor movement opportunity so their bodies are better able to focus in class.
Our preschool is comprised of energetic three, four, and five year old children. For most of our students, preschool is a completely new experience. Preschool provides a unique opportunity to meet new people and try different activities. I love watching my students spread their wings!
My students are active and need to move.
We spend a big part of our school day playing outside on the playground. The kids love to climb, jump, run, ride tricycles, dig in the dirt, swing, and slide. Big movement activities help them learn where their bodies are in space, get out extra energy, and develop their strength and coordination.
Many of my students do not have a voice so we use a variety of mediums to communicate. We use picture symbols, communication devices, visual schedules, gestures, and communication boards to help them express themselves. The kids light up when they realize they have the power to make a request, decline a task, and/or greet their peers and teachers. Watching a student find their voice is powerful and rewarding.
My Project
Most of my students have trouble managing information that comes in through the senses. These issues, sometimes called sensory processing disorder or sensory integration disorder, can have a big impact on learning and on everyday life.
Kids need to move!
A sensory path is a colorful, creative, and playful way for kids to develop motor skills like balance, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness. High-intensity activities like jumping, balancing, and animal walks get the blood pumping, helping children to focus for longer periods of time in the classroom.
Chew necklaces are a safe chewing option for individuals with sensory needs. They help to greatly reduce anxiety and stress for those with sensory processing disorders and provide a safe alternative to chewing on hands, pens, clothing, and classroom supplies.
