My Students

In our district, we have a high number of students who qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. Ours is a very diverse, rural population. My students come from backgrounds that may not be able to provide experiences that they need to develop social and emotional skills, higher-order thinking skills, or critical thinking opportunities.

My second grade students are energetic, inquisitive, and love to learn in a variety of ways including music, art, movement, technology, small group work, and hands-on activities.

Our classroom is a safe place to ask questions, to learn from our failures and mistakes, to sustain our love of learning, and to celebrate our differences.

My Project

Throughout our learning day, we meet several times on the rug for stories, social/emotional learning, reading, and math. Unfortunately, our rug is not big enough for all students, so some students are unable to be on the rug. With tile floors, and living in MN, the floor is not always warm or comfortable. A rug will allow all students to learn, be comfortable and have a place to learn in large and small groups.

A rug is able to bring our classroom community to a special place, where each student has their space and creates a sense of safety and "home." The rug is comfortable, colorful, and inviting for all students and allows for learning in our classroom.

The students will be thrilled to have this as a part of our classroom, to enhance our learning experience, and to allow a comfy place to learn.
