Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Have you ever wanted to meet the authors of your favorite childhood books like Beverly Cleary, C.S. Lewis, or Judy Blume? Here is a chance to make my students' wishes come through by helping us hear Lois Lowry, author of the book "The Giver," speak at the 92nd Street Y on April 30, 2006. I teach seventh grade English at KIPP Academy Charter School in the South Bronx. KIPP Academy is a part of the nationally recognized charter school network that has successfully helped students from low socio-economic neighborhoods enter and succeed in high school and college. Our seventh grade English class recently read "The Giver," a wonderful science fiction novel about a futuristic community that creates a Utopian society through disturbing and sadistic means. Our students loved the challenging and thought-provoking questions the novel raised and had dozens of questions that only the author could answer! Lois Lowry is scheduled to speak at the 92nd Street Y on April 30th and I would like to take six students who have made remarkable improvements in reading and writing this year to meet her. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for children to meet the author of a book they admire, and hopefully the beginning of a life-long love of reading. In addition, Ms. Lowry has written two companion books to "The Giver" called "Gathering Blue" and "The Messenger". I would like to have six copies of each novel in my classroom to encourage students who loved "The Giver" to read on. Please help us purchase the tickets before they run out! Even if the event passes, you can help our students extend their love for "The Giver" by providing copies of the companion novels. Thank you!
