My Students

I teach one hundred and fifty, middle schoolers (seventh and eighth graders) in my building per semester. They have chosen to take technology as an elective. This group includes a wide variety of students, from those identified as gifted and talented, to students identified as special education students, who need support with an individual education plan. My experience with them has taught me that they think they are "too cool for school" and usually have to be coerced into learning. Once their interest is piqued, they never cease to amaze me with their ability to learn. They are digital natives and can usually teach me a thing or two.

My students want their education to be relevant and mirror real-life experiences.

I want to give them the opportunity to shine. I want to support all the needs of my students. Together, we are a most excellent team.

My Project

My students want to learn more about programming. I researched to find something that will grow with us and these Edison robots fit the bill! We will start out with simple skills like programming Edison to follow a line we draw but then, we'll be able to level up. We'll then use LEGO bricks we already have to invent some of our own structures. Finally, we can teach each other some basic commands with programming language. These robots interact with their environment, avoiding obstacles as well as tracking lines. Additionally, the EdCreate kits will allow us to think outside the box and create additional machines that use the robots as drivers.
