Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The position of media specialist allows me the opportunity to share my love of reading with students from grades kindergarten up to fifth every week. After teaching reading as a classroom teacher for the past 19 years, this is my first year in this position. My students share my enthusiasm for reading and eagerly participate in research projects and literacy activities.
February is Black History Month, and our students need updated and engaging texts to help them learn about this topic.
Our student population is very diverse, with a range of cultures represented. We would love to be able to update our selections so students can deepen their understanding of each others' cultures.
While we do have access to online resources, research has shown the importance of children interacting with text to help solidify their reading skills and hold their interest. Thank you!
My Project
These new, updated Black History texts will make a significant impact on my students learning. Reading texts about such influential leaders as Michele Obama, Coretta Scott King and Jesse Owens help bring the theme of Black History to life.
Students will be using these texts for a variety of learning objectives, depending on the grade level.
Kindergarten through grade 2 will be working with texts to identify non-fiction text features, while grades 3-5 will be able to add more depth to their research projects with these fresh, updated titles.
Students respond to the enthusiasm of new texts, and adding these new titles to our Media Center will ensure they can be used and enjoyed for many years. Help us freshen up our existing resources with a contribution to this project. Thank you!
