Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher at Indianapolis Public Schools #67. I have 26 students currently enrolled in my room and it seems to be growing day by day! My school is located in a low economic community with 60% of the students receiving free textbook rental and free/reduced lunches. The kids in my room come from all walks of life including hispanic(with limited enlish), african-american, caucasian and even special needs boys and girls. I have noticed that for some school is the only place where they feel secure, with lots of encouragement, routine, and high expectations.
My kids deserve to have the opportunity to be provided with as many meaningful hands-on opportunities as their counterparts in the wealthier suburban schools. Unfortunately, supplies are sparse. I would like to receive materials to further their curiosity and knowlege in math and science. Imagine how meaningful it would be for kids to acutally FIND out how many cups are in a pint by exploring on their own! We can set up a rain guage outside our window and graph how much rain we had on rainy days! In the winter, we could brainstorm tools we would need to measure snowfall. We could learn about measurement of time using stopwatches! Then we could further extend that activity converting seconds to minutes and minutes to hours.
Basically, I would like to teach these skills and state standards beyond using the traditional Judy clocks in measurement of time and making the Gallon Man for cups and pints. (Though the kids love to use the clocks and make their Gallon Men, I want to step it up a knotch!) These guys deserve more and I would appreciate any help in making this a reality!
