My Students

My second grade students live in a rural and remote area. With funding based on more populated counties, we often find ourselves struggling to give our students the tools they need to be prepared for the world. Our school families knock themselves out fundraising to give our students both necessities and extras, such as books, field trips and technology. Our students are lucky to live in such a beautiful area of our country, close to nature, but they are also very isolated.

My Project

These bucket scales and weights will allow my students to explore the concept of measuring weight. It will also allow them to learn the metric system by using the metric weights.

There are many hands on science and math activities that use scales to explore the physical world.

The students can learn first hand about density, changes of matter from one form to another, relationship between size and weight and many other concepts that are best learned through exploration. I have seen children using these tools at other schools. Their enthusiasm is exciting! The best part is the connections and generalizations they make as they explore independently.

These scales will be put to good use. They will be available for use by all the classrooms in our school. The durability of this product will allow generations of students to have the rich learning experience of measuring and comparing weight.
