it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Coming from a low-income community, most of my students do not have the funds or resources to further their mathematical understanding. As we exit a pandemic which has greatly impacted students' ability to receive high-quality instruction, especially when it comes to math, due to lack of academic resources and high quality instructional opportunities. We are faced with a great learning gap which needs to be addressed via instructional aids to ensure that these students are able to achieve their academic goals.
Due to a lack of academic funding both from the school and families along with increasing class sizes we are facing an imbalance between academic resources and students.
As math curriculum becomes more difficult, not having access to proper instructional aids to make learning more accessible can result in students becoming easily discouraged and disengaged. Providing instructional aid is especially beneficial for English learners and those with learning challenges which represents a majority of my school's student body. Increasing engagement especially in the area of math is vital as many careers involve some form of math so learning these skills now will help to prepare our students for a future both in and out of the classroom. The combination of these two academic resources such as compasses and protractors will help to foster student engagement and close this academic gap by turning what is traditionally viewed as a boring/challenging subject into a more entertaining and enjoyable subject. Having access to these resources will not only help them in this class, but also the future classes as they will be cared for ensuring that they last for multiple school years.
