Measurement with the Precision of a Computer

My students need updated computer sensor and measurement equipment, including 8 Vernier Go Links and a force plate, so that they can create solutions to real-world problems found in our curriculum.

My Students

My students are learning about the world around is an how objects interact (forces and energy). We rely on outdated equipment to perform this analysis, but could do so much more with some of the latest classroom technology.

I teach Principles of Engineering and Engineering Design/Development to 10th and 12th graders.

These courses are part of the Project Lead The Way curriculum. Project Lead The Way is the nation's leading provider of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education programs. As a PLTW teacher, I am helping to prepare middle school and high school students for the global economy, equipping them with the skills and tools to become the most innovative and productive in the world. By engaging students in innovation and critical thinking, we are creating the next generation of STEM professionals. Our nation's ability to address our most crucial challenges including global warming, health care, and sustainable growth is largely dependent on having skilled, innovative, and motivated people in these fields. A contribution to this project will help to engage and equip my students to become part of the solution.

My Project

PLTW classes emphasize creativity and innovation. The result is that PLTW students become engaged with their learning, discover a passion for STEM fields, and are 10 times more likely than their college-going peers to pursue a STEM-related degree and career. PLTW provides a foundation with a pathway to college and career success in STEM-related fields. Approximately 97% of seniors who are enrolled in PLTW courses intend to pursue four-year college degrees (national average is 67%). And approximately 80% of PLTW seniors suggest they will study engineering, technology, or computer science in college (average is 32%). I have received special professional development to use activity, problem and project-based learning that allows students to apply the academic content in a real-world context. How you can help is providing our class with Computer based measurement tools: vernier links to connect the computer to various tools and the probes to perform the measurements with precision.

Today, education budgets are strapped, particularly here in California.

Our school is not able to purchase the equipment our students need. If students are able to work with the same tools and technologies that professionals use, they will be much better prepared for the workforce. With the proper materials for learning, PLTW students would be yet another step ahead of their peers. With your financial support, you can help bring these items to our classroom.
