My Students

We are seriously lacking in measurement tools with which to practice weighing objects, telling time, and reading temperatures. The worn out wooden rulers we have are difficult to read and often inaccurate.

In our class we have quite a mix of ability levels -- autistic students who need a great deal of support, English language learners of all levels, as well as identified gifted students.

We have parents who speak Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, and French in the home so we have several bilingual students. We are an inner city, Title 1 school. A majority of my students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Our school recently became an authorized International Baccalaureate School and we are proud to have been named a Distinguished School this year. My students have vastly varying ability levels, but they are all caring, enthusiastic, curious learners. I have a wonderful class this year!

My Project

My students are struggling with learning to tell time. Many of them are limited to practicing while in the classroom. Right now, we have one clock, so high on the wall the custodian needs a ladder to reach it. I would like to have many clocks, placed at my students' eye level, for my class to use each day. How can they become familiar with telling time to the minute (a state standard) when they can't even see the clock face? I am also eager to use a large thermometer, one that everyone can easily see and touch. It will be nice to track the temperature over time in the room. The rulers the district has provided are worn and difficult to read. I would like my class to feel confident when asked to measure the length of an object, in either inches or centimeters. One thing that helps learners of any ability level is to have repeated experiences with concrete objects. I can't wait to bring the measurement unit alive with all of these resources.

While reading, one student discovered that the sand's temperature has an impact on whether sea turtle embryos become male or female.

It sparked quite a discussion which would have been the perfect segue to lessons on reading a thermometer. But I don't have one! Please help enrich our classroom and enhance our measurement unit by providing us with these much-needed tools. The clocks and rulers will supplement what we already have and the thermometers will be wonderful new additions.
