Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are young Kindergartners with a thirst for knowledge. They love to explore and observe the world around them. They love to play all sorts of games. They enjoy building things and making all sorts of creations. And even though they are just learning to read, they love books!

My students are budding scientists, writers, mathematicians, artists, peacemakers, and so much more!

They love a challenge, and they especially enjoy working with others to tackle these challenges. The majority of the students at my school are Latinos. Most of their parents are immigrants from Mexico and Central America. There is a small but growing number of Black, Asian, and bi-racial students at my school. My classroom exemplifies this diversity.

My Project

Music is powerful. It can inspire, bring joy, teach, and much more. Kindergarteners love music. They find joy in making music. I am requesting five ukuleles to complete the class set of ukuleles already in our classroom. Now, each child will have their own ukulele. My students love to sing, they love to use classroom and household items to make music. Music education helps students in so many ways. But the most important thing I plan to do with our new ukuleles is to teach students songs of diversity and inclusion. I want my students to know that they are important and they matter. I recently participated in a ukulele workshop for teachers. We learned songs of resistance and resilience.

Music can help us all feel seen and heard.

Music can inspire and uplift. I want to share the songs I learned in the ukulele workshop, such as "With My Own Two Hands" and "Sing About Martin" with my students. I felt inspired and hopeful while learning to play these and other songs in the ukulele workshop. I know my students will also be inspired to learn these songs promoting inclusion and diversity. They will feel empowered when they hear that they are capable of making beautiful music with these perfectly sized and colorful ukuleles. And we all know that young children love to share the songs they learn with friends and family. They will share their joy with the world.
