My Students

My kindergarten and 1st grade students are eager and thoughtful learners. Though small in size, they have gracious hearts, resilient spirits, and limitless curiosities. They challenge me every day to be more responsive, innovative, and understanding of difference. I'm lucky to be their teacher.

Our neighborhood is known to be one of the most diverse in the country and every classroom in our school reflects that gift.

In addition to the richness that such diversity brings, we also recognize that different opportunities and experiences in early childhood can create inequitable beginnings for children entering school. As a school community, we know without a doubt that all of our students are highly capable and work with determination to ensure that every student has the resources, instruction, and support necessary to achieve success.

My Project

With increasingly rigorous standards, hyper focus on academic learning, and even standardized testing as early as kindergarten, our young students have less opportunities to play, explore, and discover than in the past. Holding these high expectations for all students pushes educators to teach more equitably and we know for certain that all of our students can achieve great things. Yet the focus on teaching reading, writing, and math (tested subjects) even in developmentally appropriate and innovative ways, leaves little room or time for the messy, hands-on science exploration that students crave.

These experiments will introduce students to properties of matter while also giving students a rich shared experience that invites endless opportunities to observe, talk, and play.

Students will use the jars, salt, and pipe cleaners to grow their own salt crystals and will use the glue and baking soda to make slime. The food coloring will be used in both for students to customize their projects. The STEAM books have engaging, colorful photographs and child-friendly explanations of complex scientific concepts which will inspire students to pursue even more experimenting and discovery. These materials will give students meaningful and memorable experiences that will surely inspire a lifetime of curiosity about science.
