This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Allowing more than 30 third graders to experience math by using manipulatives can be challenging. My students are just learning English in addition to studying math in a new language. They are very eager to learn but need to do and think rather than sit and become overwhelmed by new concepts.
My classroom is a dual language classroom where students learn in both languages to help them grasp new concepts in their native language while supporting them in English which is so important for their future success.
Most of the students are first generation in the United States and while their families support them and want to see them succeed, they often don't have the language skills to help them complete their English work at home. Our students need to go home with materials that support their learning and materials that their families can understand and use to learn with them.
My Project
With these math materials and manipulatives, my students will experience math differently than they've ever done before. They will get the opportunity to focus on concepts and skills by using different materials to help them. The materials are very concrete and require a lot of critical thinking.
Once my students have practiced the activities at school, they will be able to take them home to review them with their families. They will take and bring back daily the materials and they will document in a journal how they extended their learning at home with their families.
This will be a very concrete and exciting way for students to share their learning with their families at home. Families will also be encouraged to share other strategies. Students and families will write in their math journal and share ways of solving problems, any problems they had solving the problems, and any other ideas families may have to solve problems.
This process will be very interactive.
This project will allow my students multiple ways of learning and developing more critically the new math concepts they are expected to know.
Because they will use a variety of manipulatives in the classroom and at home, they can extend their learning beyond the classroom. Their families will have the opportunity to learn along side of the students and understand what's expected of them. Students will also act as teachers to their families and gain confidence in their abilities.
