Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a speech therapist working in an urban school district with medically complex students ages 3-22. Our students have many needs and often lack funding for items that could greatly improve their lives. My students primarily use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to communicate and are working on feeding and oral motor and sensory skills with myself and their occupational therapist. Right now we do not have the tools needed to help our students grow their skills. I appreciate any donations and know that they will greatly help our very deserving students.
My Project
Materials in this project will be used at school and be given to families to use at home. Students who are working on these skills are often very uncomfortable and experience skin breakdown due to always being wet from saliva. The cloth bibs will help prevent the need to change shirts multiple times per day. The pacifier clips will be used to attach the chewy tubes to the students so they can independently access them. Other tools will be used during mealtimes to increase sensory awareness and improve feeding skills.
The donations made to this project will help our students practice their oral motor and sensory skills in school and at home.
I want to be able to provide students and families with the tools needed to increase skills and comfort with feeding and saliva management.
