This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of my favorite parts of the beginning of the school year is when students new to our school and new to the country enter my little library nook, spot the shelf of Spanish books, and gasp in delight. "¡Me encanta este libro!" one student told me, gesturing to the top shelf, dropping the tough-guy act he had maintained throughout the whole first day of school.

We need awesome, engaging books for readers of all languages and at all levels to encourage a robust love of reading from day one!

With no school-wide library of our own, it is up to teachers to find and provide the best texts for students to read and enjoy.

Students at my school, a Title I school serving primarily bilingual learners who come from immigrant and refuge backgrounds, lack a centralized school library and often struggle to find books that are interesting and accessible. As an ESL teacher, I constantly tell my students that being bilingual is a superpower, but without interesting texts in both English and Spanish, my students don't often get to exercise or develop that superpower.

My Project

The books you help purchase through this project directly impact multiple classrooms of students who come to my library to borrow books from all different grades and teachers.

Students reading these books will expand their perspectives through the magic of imagination, develop their fluency by reading aloud, learn new vocabulary through exposure, and see more of themselves and of the world through the stories that are told.

Students get the treat of choosing a book that calls to them, checking it out of the classroom library, and savoring the book during any independent reading blocks.
