We are a new magnet school! Our International Baccalaureate school joins three others in our district. Families choose this type of school because we encourage inquiry and questioning of how things work and why. This IB philosophy greatly values and reinforces the arts. Students in K-5 have general music twice a week.
My students are energetic and playful, thoughtful and inquiring.
Students are open to many genres of music from around the world and throughout history. We learn about music by singing, playing, dancing, creating, and improvising! I use an Orff instrumentarium (xylophones, glockenspiels, metallophones) to play a wide variety of songs and pieces. We also play ukuleles, recorders, and drums!
My Project
Second and third-grade students will combine Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) into fantastic Shadow Puppet Theater performances. Just imagine "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" with the rain, sun, water spout, and spider!
A learning experience full of STEAM exploration!
This project will include choosing a song, making shadow puppet theater boxes and puppets, working with the light source, and then rehearsing and giving the final performance for their classmates and for the younger students in kindergarten and first grade! We will also video our performances for shadow puppet theater binge watching! Here are the steps from start to finish.
Students will explore the SCIENCE of light and shadow, reflection, transparent/opaque/translucent images, by using a light source (art projectors) and a screen. Students will experiment with placement of their object and how distance relates to size. Students will use ENGINEERING and MATH skills to make portable puppet theaters out of cardboard boxes; cutting out the main opening and applying butcher paper for the screen. We will also have students using the garment racks covered in butcher paper and the ready-made puppet theater (on dollies), to explore a bigger stage/shadow area.
With TECHNOLOGY, students will use iPads to search online images that relate to their song, then print them and trace onto black cardstock. They may have to adjust proportions (MATH) and sizes of the images (trees and people can't be the same size OR adjust the depth of how far they have it from their light source). The ARTS will include visual art and music. Once students have copied their images, they will trace them onto black card stock, cut out, and apply to the bamboo sticks, creating their stick puppets. Then rehearsing/staging their song.
What a fun combination of creating, exploring, and learning, in that well-rounded STEAM way!
