McGyver Aquaponics

Help me give my students outdoor hydroponics systems, sturdy shelving to put it on and two more raised beds to construct a self-feeding aquaponics set-up.

My Project

We have three huge fish tanks with tilapia inside that we want to utilize to create an aquaponics set up on the farm. The fish produce waste that plants can use for nutrients to grow big and tasty. Currently we do not have a set up that can utilize this nutrient rich water to grow all kinds of plants for food. The hydroponics systems will be placed on the sturdier wire shelving right below the fish tanks so the fish poop water can feed the leafy greens we will grow in the systems.

McGyver could make or fix anything with some wire, duct tape and pipes laying around.

We want to become McGyver's and create an aquaponics set-up that will be able to use fish poop water to grow lots of food for our students, faculty and community. Students will come up with a system design using the hydroponics systems, shelving and water pump. Problem-solving and prototype design will make for a fun and exciting project using these supplies. The raised beds will be used for comparison against the hydroponics system. Both will utilize nutrient rich water from the fish tanks to see which system grows better, faster and more robust. The water pump and tubing will be used to water the raised beds. This project will require the most planning and thinking of any project we have done, but I think my students will enjoy the challenge!
