Maybe We Can Drink THIS Water...

My students need two small water quality survey kits and specimens of two plant species (one aquatic, one terrestrial) to conduct chemical and physical tests on local water sources.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Sterling's classroom raised $196

My students love to think about themselves! They are very curious what types of things have an effect on them and to what extent. As their science teacher, I am constantly seeking new ways to help them explore their questions and find answers. I am in my second year teaching environmental science and biology at a high school in Georgia. The school is in a high-need, high-risk community and has a history of under-performance on standardized testing and other student assessments, especially in science content areas. I LOVE to share my experience and knowledge of environmental science and biology with my students. For me, a science classroom NEEDS to be a place of new discoveries and realizations, and I seek everyday to make it just that for my students’ sake.

My students are continually asking me when we are going to conduct our next laboratory experience. Well, to strengthen my students’ understanding of environmental science and biology, I would like to provide them with the opportunity to study local water sources—including our school’s drinking water and nearby ponds and rivers. By doing this, we will be able to compare and contrast the quality of water in different areas and determine where healthy water can and cannot by found and WHY. In order to conduct these tests, I am urgently requesting materials to provide them with this opportunity.

To give my students the chance to conduct these water quality laboratories, I am requesting two small water quality testing kits that will enable me to conduct several tests with each of my classes of both environmental science and biology. Additionally, I would also like to acquire two species of plants—one aquatic and one terrestrial—which we will be able to use along with the water quality testing kits to see what impact the water has on these plants. By completing these water quality tests, my students will discover FIRST-HAND how bodies of water are affected by their surrounding environment and how that tainted water can eventually have an effect on them!

I believe that providing my students with this opportunity will greatly enhance their learning experience and help them to gain necessary knowledge of environmental science and biology. Your help as a donor will guarantee that my high school students will gain a deep and thorough understanding of environmental and biological sciences. Completing laboratories such as water quality tests is an essential skill in environmental science and biology, and offering this opportunity to my students will ensure that they will be setup for success in future science courses—in high school and in college.
