My Students

How many middle school students do you know who get excited about learning... during the summer? With the help of a high-interest, best-selling novel, I will turn summer school into an exciting exploration of justice, courage, and the willingness to stand up for what is right.

"I can't go down without a fight.

Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to…to show the Capitol they don't own me. That I'm more than just a piece in their Games." These words apply so beautifully. My students are fighters in the best sense of the word. They come from a variety of backgrounds, not all of which are pleasant. Many of which are downright heartbreaking. This doesn't stop them from coming to school with optimism and energy. My school is in an urban setting, and most of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They deal with challenges ranging from a dangerous neighborhood to unstable homes, but they know that our school is a safe place for them to explore, ask questions, and learn. My students are the victims of an educational system that tells them they are not good enough and that they don't deserve an education. However, with your support, they will be excited about summer school and will be able to prove that they are "more than just a piece of their games."

My Project

"The Hunger Games" is a novel (the first in a series of three) written by Suzanne Collins. It tells the story of Katniss Everdeen who is a citizen of the futuristic and totalitarian Panem, formerly the United States. We need a class set of "The Hunger Games." Each year, the nation's leaders in the Capitol host what they call "The Hunger Games." The Games are meant to be a cruel and vicious reminder to the 12 districts of Panem of the supreme power of the Capitol as well as the losses suffered during a rebellion that had taken place decades earlier. The Games require each district to send two randomly drawn children between the ages of 11 and 18 to fight to the death. When Katniss' sister's name is drawn, Katniss volunteers to take her place, throwing her into a gladiator-like battle. She must fight the other tributes as well as her own morality, the unrelenting tyranny of the Capitol, and above all, her own fight to stay alive. The themes present in this novel apply.

My students face a seemingly insurmountable challenge: trying to make better lives for themselves in one of the most dangerous cities in the country, while dealing with their own personal and family issues.

Not to mention that they are part of a socio-economic group that has been historically under-served when it comes to education. This novel preaches grace under fire, will to survive, and courage in the face of opposition. This novel will open doors of conversation that could be life-changing.
