Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) is important for fifth-grade students because it helps them develop critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in school and future careers. At this age, students are naturally curious and eager to explore how things work—STEM taps into that curiosity with hands-on learning that makes abstract concepts more concrete and exciting. It also helps build a strong foundation in scientific literacy and math fluency, while encouraging collaboration and resilience through experimentation and trial-and-error.

Using STEM materials like interactive science station kits about magnets and force and motion will help my students understand the topics through hands-on experiences, by allowing them to actively explore scientific concepts instead of just reading about them.

When students can see a magnet attract an object, feel the resistance of friction, or build simple machines that move, they make meaningful connections between what they observe and the underlying science. These tangible experiences deepen comprehension, spark curiosity, and help students retain information longer. Hands-on learning, along with using dry erase markers, pencils, and erasers, also encourages teamwork, experimentation, and critical thinking—skills that are essential in STEM education.
