This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 7th-grade students are eager to engage with literature that challenges them to think critically, analyze themes, and make connections to the world around them. I noticed how excited they were when we did a lesson on an excerpt from The Hunger Games. I immediately saw their excitement for reading. A class set of The Hunger Games will provide them with a shared reading experience that fosters deep discussions, builds literacy skills, and ignites a love for reading. Many of my students do not have access to books at home, and having a personal copy during our unit will allow them to fully immerse themselves in the novel, annotate key ideas, and develop their reading confidence.

With these books, my goal is to strengthen students’ analytical reading skills while also exploring themes of resilience, fairness, and personal agency.

Through collaborative discussions, writing assignments, and creative projects, my students will sharpen their ability to cite evidence, evaluate character motivations, and draw connections to their own lives. By providing them with a high-interest, thought-provoking novel, I aim to show them that reading isn’t just an academic requirement—it’s a powerful way to understand the world and their place in it.

What makes my students special is their curiosity, creativity, and willingness to engage in meaningful conversations. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique perspectives to our classroom discussions. Many are discovering their voices as readers and thinkers, and I want to provide them with the tools and opportunities to grow. The Hunger Games is the perfect novel to challenge and inspire them, and with your support, we can create a learning experience they will remember long after they leave my classroom.
