Almost all of us know what it is like to go to a restaurant and order food. For most of my preschool students though, this is something they have never experienced.
My preschool students are some of the most amazing kids I have ever met.
They attend an open space school (that means no walls or doors to their classroom) in one of the most violent communities in Washington, DC. Many of them come from single parent homes and have seen more in their short lives then we will in a lifetime. Despite all of the challenges they face, they still have the biggest smiles and desire to come to school and learn.
My Project
We recently adopted a new curriculum called Tools of the Mind. This curriculum involves the children in play that are based on real life scenarios. With these materials I will be able to build background knowledge with students about what it is like to go to a restaurant, order food, and who works at a restaurant. I will use the books to teach that background knowledge. The props will then be used in centers to open restaurants. We will have a sandwich shop where students can order and make sandwiches, a bakery where they can order and make sweets, and a pizza parlor where students can order and make pizzas. These materials will allow for them to engage in real life play that they do not get to experience in their daily lives.
These materials will allow for 16, preschool students to experience what it is like to go to a restaurant and order food.
Not only will they get that experience, but they will also learn appropriate manners for going to a restaurant and explore possible jobs they could have when they get older.
