This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a very special school—the majority of the students are minorities (and did I mention 90% females?). Most of the students come to my school for the special majors that we offer. Not only do these students work hard on the academic courses, but even more so on the major classes they are passionate about. These students have visions: they want to be designers, businessmen/women, entrepreneurs, models, artists, and photographers.
I love how they incorporate the skills they learn from my math class to help them with their work in their major classes, such as using various geometric shapes to aid their fashion design inspirations, manipulating rates/percents to create investment portfolios, etc.
Lastly, I am always moved by how these smart, brave, motivated young ladies work extremely hard to break the barriers of being a minority and/or a female.
I love my students!
My Project
Working in a Title I school, I have seen firsthand how much these students are lacking.
Some students come to school hungry, freezing cold with no warm jackets in the winter, and/or without basic school supplies.
We have been in this pandemic for a year and a half. A lot of these students are in a very unstable state emotionally and financially.
I wish I can provide them with clothes and/or food—but I am not able to. So the least I can do is to provide them with school supplies that they need in school, but cannot afford.
This project includes some very basic supplies such as pencils, erasers, graph paper, mini whiteboards, markers, etc. My goal is to leave these supplies out at the back of the room, and students can freely take what they need (instead of feeling embarrassed when asking for supplies).
