This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We started reading during lunch using the book “Because of Winn Dixie” where the students focused on reading comprehension and fluency because I have some very struggling students. After each chapter, we play games like Kahoot, quizzes, and Blooklet to test their understanding of what was read the night before. Well, we started playing games based on the book. The students thought they would play games and make 100, but they were wrong! They would get incentives for the highest scores, well it was only a few students reading and winning. By the way, Takis and blow pop are the winning incentives for my class. I only have five students. So, I know the students weren’t reading and completing activities nightly. My students are very competitive and encourage the other students to step up. I love them because they function like a family. And these students want to be the best readers. I wish I could get a book for each of them. Reading at lunch is building my reading levels and self-esteem while promoting learning. The students will enjoy a “Winn Dixie” Party at the end of Because of Winn Dixie. The benefits of promoting reading aloud in my class include exposing students to higher-level text, exposing students to a variety of genres, teaching targeted specific reading skills, and how to apply those skills to their reading. This helps increase students' listening and reading comprehension by modeling thinking processes, fluency, and decoding strategies, and integrating different subject-matter areas and building a sense of community among all students (reluctant readers and strong readers). These books will allow each student to have a copy of the book as we read.
