This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In a time when most kids are into playing with their video game consoles more than they are in picking up a book, schools and parents struggle to make reading happen. With the advent of eBooks, which are now available from school publishers and public libraries, "old paper books" have finally caught up, digitally.
The students that I have the pleasure of working with are hungry for knowledge even if they don't always ask for it.
I serve in a school in an under-privileged community. The fact of the matter is that the more we can get these students engaged in their own learning, the more they will show faces of amazement as they realize that they can really enjoy the work necessary to improve their knowledge base.
I am responsible for teaching the whole school how technology can be used to maximize their learning. I think it is time to reconnect them with the wealth of knowledge and adventure in classic books through the use of eBooks in a Nook.
My Project
The Nook by Barnes and Noble will help introduce my students to the wonderful world of books in, of course, a digital format. The collection of elementary books available from Barnes and Noble has titles which are interactive. What better way for the children to put down their game consoles than to choose to read an eBook that they can interact with as they read? Even better, for the really young ones, the Nook will read to them!
With the Nook device, I will be able to introduce a new device to the whole school as they visit the computer lab biweekly, reaching about 1,000 students plus the staff.
After the introduction and demonstration, I hope to increase the traffic of readers in our 'library' even if it is a digital library. When more students realize that they can access their eBooks at anytime without having to worry about late fees and or penalties for loosing a paper book, they will love to read.
