I work in a lower socioeconomic area of the United States, and that would lead many people to think that my students really wouldn't care about being on the leading edge of technology or even education. That couldn't be further from the truth. The problem with being in such an area isn't that the students don't care, it is they don't believe anyone else cares enough to help them be leaders. My students long to achieve at every level, and it is displayed in the manner in which my students act in school and during extra curricular activities. Our photography club wants to not only take snapshots they long to create art through mastery of technological skills.
I teach in the Mississippi Delta region and over 66% of our student population is on free and reduced lunch.
Luckily, our school provides as well as possible for our academic classrooms, but like most small rural schools we do not have the money to purchase the "extras" of education. When asking for things for the classroom, we have the basics covered. When it comes to extra curricular activities we just don't have the monies to spend on those "extras."
My Project
Photography creates a moment in time and is often used to keep memories. We started a photography club at our school because the interst was so high. We have been amazed at how much our student want to learn. They are not happy with just taking snapshots, they want to create compelling art with their photography. We take our students on monthly outings even if it just to walk uptown and take street photography. In order to learn more we need better equipment.
My students who are in the Photography Club need at least one DSLR Camera with the ability to shoot raw photos which we can later edit to create novel artwork.
We can also later use the same DSLR camera to take senior portraits for students in our school who do not have the money to purchase them.
It is our goal for our students to become lifelong learners and by teaching to their intersts we are acheiving our goal. With your help we can continue to grow this interest and possibly lead students to a possible career path.
