During the school year, every year I find my self making changes in our daily routines to help make the most of our precious class time! This year I have noticed we lose a significant amount of instructional time waiting for students to get their pencils ready class. While this may seem like such a simple task to those looking in, teachers know how crucial a good routine for pencils can be.
This year, my regular strategy is not terribly effective with my class so I am working to change it to something more effective for THEM; I am requesting a class set of pencils bags to go into their class set of book bags (which would get holes from just dropping a pencils in there).
This will allow them to have their supplies ready to go in their bags as we start the day, and will eliminate the need for 24 students constantly getting up and retrieving pencils for the first 10 minutes of class. Additionally, this will allow students to have back up pencils in case their first one breaks, eliminating the need for students to randomly get up and sharpen pencils in the middle of my teaching. Thankfully I have enough pencils to supply all my students with a few already. I just need to get them some sturdy pencils bags. We will also be using the clear baskets to organize the student supply station for item students need but not every day, such as glue, markers and colored pencils.
