My students need Chromebooks! We hope to replace four more outdated Asus tablets that don't connect reliably to the internet with four new Chromebooks that work seamlessly with our district network!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a Title I school in sunny Arizona. The majority of my students speak English as a second language, and 100% of my students receive free lunch. Many of them have experienced the difficulties and trauma that can come from living in poverty and struggle to focus on school as a result. That said, my students are some of the brightest, most creative kids you can imagine.
They are becoming quite the talented writers, but unfortunately, many of my students don't have access to computers and the internet at home.
As a result, they are not as tech savvy as they need to be to compete in the real world. They struggle with basic skills like typing, researching, collaborating and emailing on computers. We try and get them in the computer lab as often as possible, but with 700 kids on campus and only a few available labs,as you can imagine it can be quite difficult!
My Project
With four more Chromebooks, we are hoping to truly maximize our use of Google Classroom! The four Chromebooks would replace four of our five-year-old Asus tablets that have a tempestuous relationship with the internet connection. As many of you know, Chromebooks have a much simpler operating system that requires less upkeep and runs more smoothly in a classroom setting!
The goal is to have a seamless transition into our technology use each class period- no wasted learning time on the problem-solving that comes with outdated technology.
Currently, there are several students who draw the short stick each class period when they end up on an old tablet. On any given day, the tablet freezes, kicks them off the internet multiple times, or runs so slowly they can't get much work done. Our Chromebooks have no such issues- just log in and you are up and running! As our Chromebooks slowly replace our dwindling tablets, I notice more time spent on answering content questions and less time wasted on problem-solving the technology we use. Time is freed up so I can provide more frequent feedback- which studies show leads to increased student achievement!
I cannot begin to express how exponential student growth has been with the assistance of this incredible technology. Not only are kids more invested in their researching, collaborating and writing, but students' technological literacy has improved dramatically as well.
21st-century skills like typing, collaborating, researching, and examining sources for bias are no longer just nice skills to have- they are vital to students' success. With your help, I hope to ensure that every child has the opportunity for meaningful technology use in our classroom.
