This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For so many of my students, school is not just a place for reading and writing. The school is their first introduction to American culture and way of life. They are introduced to several others in similar situations, but from different parts of the world. As they learn to navigate their classes and interact with teachers and classmates, then they are able to apply those navigation skills outside of the school day.

And then it all stopped.

Now they're alone in an apartment trying to find a private spot to learn, study, and have a video meeting.

My Project

Like everyone else, I am scrambling and trying to find ways to make the most of the distance learning environment. I teach students who are both new to the United States and the language of English. One way they survive that experience is to learn through modeling and familiar routines. I would like to continue with that model through a distance learning approach.

Many students still need help with the physical act of writing, so I use paper handouts so they can actively engage with the text.

I will continue to model that skill in my distance-learning classroom. I would like to equip my virtual classroom with a document camera to annotate texts in real time and to do read-alouds, and use quality headphones with a microphone for voice projection and enunciation.
