Maximize Classroom Technology and Improve Reading Skills
Help me give my students a set of in-class headphones that will allow every student to fully utilize the technology we already have available.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am fortunate enough to work in a bilingual setting at my school. Most of my students are from Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico, and about 75% are English Language Learners. For decades, Massachusetts did not allow bilingual education. Because of this ban, there are few bilingual schools.
This is a tragedy because on a daily basis I see the invaluable benefit of allowing students to learn, play, and build a community in their home language.
Parents are less isolated; they know when they will be able to communicate with teachers and administrators. Students who are new to the States are able to access content and begin learning the minute they step into the school.
Learning in two languages does have added challenges; specifically with reading and writing skills. Our school has invested in some great self-directed learning opportunities through research-based programs such as Lexia Core 5. We have Chromebooks available in the classroom but unfortunately, most students are not able to access the full benefit of these programs because their families cannot provide headphones. I would like to provide each student with a pair of headphones to wear in the classroom.
My Project
There is a wealth of videos, apps, games, programs and other content available for self-directed learning, specifically for English Language Learners as well as students performing below grade level. Most of these excellent resources need to be listened to. Most families have not been able to provide their child with a pair of headphones that stay in the classroom and can be used to listen and practice phonics or language developments.
Sadly, the school's investments in these technologies and resources are wasted without headphones- audio that will not disrupt other's learning.
These headphones will be used daily in intervention groups for students who need extra practice with phonics, reading fluency, or language development. They will also be valuable for students who are performing above grade level and need challenging, self-directed curriculum.
