Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in an urban area. The school has an estimated enrollment of about four hundred fifty students for the 2018-2019 school year in grades TK-5. Additionally, we house a state pre-k program. About 97.7% of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, and 79.4% are English language learners. The school is a dual language school, so instruction is taught in both English and Spanish.
The students at our school are wonderful children who need a little extra support to reach their goals.
Our school is located in an economically depressed area, and our school district has recently gone through a battery of budget cuts that have left us struggling to meet student needs.
We are on a mission to provide an intellectually stimulating, culturally prosperous, and socio-emotionally supportive environment for every child through collaboration and reflection between the school, parents, and community.
My Project
Many of my students are second language learners. Typically, they do not have the exposure to high-quality texts in their home language. We want to ensure that our students have equal access to academic texts in both English and Spanish. Max Axiom is a great choice for this because the series of graphic novels provide a hybrid of non-fiction and fiction - the context of the stories is fictional but the information content is non-fiction.
Representation is important, and we need academic texts in which our students can see themselves.
Max Axiom is an African-American male Scientist and the books are presented in Spanish language. We believe that it is important that students see their home language as present in the school setting as English, and that students feel a sense of pride and agency in being bilingual. We also think it is important that they see people of color in academic roles. We also want to break the misguided stereotype that Science, Math, and other academic pursuits are "English only" "White only" endeavors. We believe that this thinking is beyond hurtful and oppresses children looking to succeed but feeling under represented in scholastic pursuits.
We want students to see themselves as being able to be successful in any field of their choice. We believe that starts with seeing their home language represented in academic texts.
