Maus the Graphic Novel

My Project

Students would like to learn more about the Holocaust. A conversation with students that I do not teach showed that students have heard about it but do not really know any of the details. This project will help to change that with copies of the graphic novel, "Maus," by Art Spiegelman. This set includes both parts and a 16-page booklet designed by the artist. "Maus" is particularly powerful because it tells the story of the Holocaust through the eyes of a survivor's family. This graphic novel can serve as a starting point for discussions about the complexities of the Holocaust, the importance of memory and storytelling, and the lasting effects of trauma.

Graphic novels are an engaging and accessible medium for students.

Once students have learned about the Holocaust with this graphic novel, students will develop their own awareness campaigns about the Holocaust and other issues that they will identify. Students may create posters, videos, or other ways to share awareness for their selected issue. These awareness campaigns will be shared with the rest of the school community to further the knowledge and understanding of our entire school community.
