This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Injustice is the theme of my Sophomore English class, raising students' global awareness. Throughout the course we discuss topics such as genocide and dehumanization, censorship, and freedom of speech.
Although it is an English class, students are often looking at historical and modern cases of injustice and making it relevant to their own lives.
As they study these topics, they learn the importance of tolerance. One of the ways we discuss tolerance and history, is by reading the graphic novel Maus.
Students read the book digitally; however, I print some paper copies of chapters for students who cannot keep up with the PDF version. While this has worked the past year, there is no denying the fact that physical copies are needed. Graphic novels were made to be read in print, but that experience is not something my student are familiar with. Many of them have never read a graphic novel, while others have not used physical versions of books in several years.
This project is crucial seeing as it directly aids the curriculum and enhances the learning experience. It gives students a moment to put the screens aside and just focus on the story, engaging in the important conversations that we are having.
