My students need this graphic novel to aid in their learning about the Holocaust.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is a freshmen English class at a very large high school. The students that I teach, slightly over 100 in a day, are mainly composed of Hispanic descent.
They are always trying their hardest as well as trying to further themselves in regards to having opportunities to succeed.
Books are always the answer!
The majority of my students receive free and reduced lunches, so they do not have the funds to buy new and exciting books to read.
My Project
My students are struggling readers that often shy away from reading books. This graphic novel, Maus I: A Survivor's Tale, is an interesting way to bring history to life while students read about one survivor’s story from a different perspective. The students are able to learn about the Holocaust, build comprehension skills, and engage in discussions. Another great thing about this book is that it is great for Socratic Seminars where students write their own questions and present them to their classmates. The students then engage in a student-led discussion while referencing the text. This book truly aids in a rigorous and high interest unit.
