This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day at PAVE Academy includes scholars hard at work for over 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. The third and fourth grade scholars earning this trip are heavily focused on their academics and have gone above and beyond expectations.
The scholars at our school come from humble backgrounds where their families are not able to provide them with experiences as rich and exciting as going to Manhattan to see a Broadway musical.
Through the hustle and bustle of New York City, nestled in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn, sits our cozy high performing charter school. Academic expectations at our school are very high and scholars work day in and out on persevering though the tough academic challenges they face. Their vibrant determination to succeed showcases their excellent character. Not only do scholars work hard every day, but they are rewarded for doing so. Typically that reward looks like an amazing test grade that they can show off to their families, but we would like to be able to give them an even more exciting reward that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
My Project
Twice a year, our school holds an auction for scholars who have earned weekly "scholar dollars" throughout the year to collectively combine their "money" in order to bid on prizes. The stakes are high and scholars bid against each other to earn amazing prizes. We just held our winter auction and the 8 scholars who won this prize are very excited.
The prize we have offered them is a club called "Matilda: from page to screen to stage". In this club, scholars will be expected to read, discuss and analyze the book Matilda by Roald Dahl. After reading the book, we will be watching the movie and comparing it to the book through an academic based discussion.
Finally, the most exciting part is that we would like to have the opportunity to take the children to see Matilda on Broadway followed by a discussion on artistic presentation, limitations and expectations of a book, movie, and musical.
Your donation will help give 8 children an experience to remember.
When they are an adult and are asked what their favorite memory of elementary school was, I'm sure that without a doubt they will be able to tell their friends and family members that it was when their teacher took them to go see a musical on Broadway.
