My students are simply the best. Most of them struggle with reading, for various reasons, but they are definitely showing a newfound love of reading for pleasure. It is their dedication and perseverance that inspire me to devote every effort to their education.
My students come from many different walks of life.
Some of my students live with relatives other than their parents. Others have recently moved to this country. Some spend most of their day at school and rely on the school to provide some of their most basic needs. A few live through unimaginable loss and are often too distracted by life to focus on their education. Needless to say, reading is easily and often pushed to the back burner.
Since introducing novel studies to my students in October, they have really learned to loved reading. So far, we have read three novels together, but I need to add a few books to our classroom library so they will have enough to read for the entire school year.
Reading skills are important across ALL subjects!
Since beginning these novel studies, I have observed significant progress in many of my students. My most hesitant readers are now eager readers... they even volunteer to read in class.
As we continue to read together daily, my students will not only improve their reading skills but their comprehension, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
