My Students
Once a week, my students look forward to learning through interactive games. It's a nice break from our traditional math books, but the learning continues. I would like to incorporate some new activities into our weekly math centers.
I teach departmentalized math to fifth and sixth graders at an inner city elementary school.
My school is very diverse racially and socioeconomically.
My students are also very diverse when it comes to their learning. In a standard class I have advanced students who are ready to apply the skills they have mastered, working alongside students who have not mastered the skill yet. In addition, I teach many students with special needs and several English Language Learners. As a result, I must have several bags of tricks when it comes to keeping all of my students engaged.
My Project
My students work very hard in my math class. As a result, I like to reward them with a break from the traditional pencil and paper math once a week. I make sure the learning continues by allowing students to play math games. Each game targets a different skill, and I choose which student plays which game. The students are not aware of the differentiation that is taking place. They only know that they are having fun!
I am requesting several math board games, tangram and pattern block activity cards, and "I have...who has..." games which students love to play as a class. Each of these supplies will be an asset to our math centers.
Math is a subject that must be both fun, as well as structured, and that is exactly what I am requesting in this grant.
Students need to learn in different ways at different times, the important thing is that they continue to practice and apply their skills. Please help me accomplish this.
