Mathematics Through Literacy

My students need 34 interactive read alouds that are math based for interactive engagement.

My Students

Do you remember how much you loved it when adults read stories to you? I want to connect math through literacy and allow students to use their imaginations in a different way.

I am teaching at an international school in a low income area in Washington State.

We are a Title I school, trying really hard to provide our students with the resources to succeed. The school has a very diverse group of students with over 20 different languages spoken at home. Most of the students are receiving free or reduced lunches. Some are homeless and being at school is the only stable place in their lives. My students are eager to learn, they love math and reading....I would love to connect the two content areas in a fun engaging way!

My Project

On Friday I try and do an interactive read aloud that connects the content being taught to the story. Students are then put into groups and will have a hands-on, problem solving activity that connects with the book and math content. Students love Fridays because they love the stories and the opportunity to work together. The problem is I have limited interactive read aloud's that are math based that can be used during this time so we are only able to do this once a month. I know the students would love it if we would be able to do activities like these on a weekly basis and with your help we can!

Donations to this project will add books into the classroom.

It will enhance students engagement in literacy through mathematics. Students will be introduced to new stories and get the opportunity to reread them during their reading time. I have always found that when you read a book aloud to students they are more likely to read it on their own again, whereas if they hadn't been introduced to it they probably wouldn't grab it off the shelf.
