This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Research has demonstrated that teaching students’ mathematics in early childhood is essential for the students to be able to negotiate their environment as they develop and mature.
As part of the first grade New York State Core Mathematical Standards, the students are introduced to the following mathematical strands: number sense, operations (addition and subtraction), algebra, geometry, patterns, measurement, time, money, graphing, fractions, and more.
Through multiple modes of instruction and practice, students are able to develop and refine their mathematical understanding and application to numerous everyday mathematical problems. We currently implement the Everyday Math Curriculum in which students are introduced to different mathematical strands daily an in a circular process in which lessons build upon each other. In our classroom children with special needs are integrated into a classroom with typically developing children. All the children learn alongside each other and engage in child- centered learning activities.
My Project
Your donation of mathematics games and materials will help to reinforce mini math lessons across a variety of strands through fun interactive games in which students can practiced learned skills and engage in enriched mathematical discussions with peers regarding their problem solving strategies. In addition, by playing with the mathematical games the students increase their social interactions with peers and improve their positive association with learning mathematics. On Fridays, the students are given an opportunity to practice the learned skills during center time. On Fridays we hope to use the various math games with the students during small guided group centers. We hope to also provide some students the ability to borrow the games over the weekends and share what they have learned in school with their families, thereby strengthening the home-school connection.
Moreover, this will continue to serve students in the upcoming years.
This gift will enable them students to refine and develop their skills across a variety of domains while at the same time instilling in them an inherent love of mathematics. Thank you in advance on behalf of our young mathematicians!
