Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My day consists of the following activities; meeting with grade level teams, providing professional development, modeling math strategies within the classroom, observing math instruction and providing feedback. All activities are focused to equitably increase math achievement for all students.
My 860 students are located in two Title 1 inner city schools spanning the grades K-8.
We have very diverse populations with a high level of poverty as well as second language speakers. Many students test below their grade level in math and therefore, think they are bad at math. Once they are challenged in an engaging way they discover they are capable and their skills improve daily. I know my students are capable of closing the achievement gap and acquiring the critical thinking skills they need to improve their circumstances.
My Project
The depth of knowledge that the common core requires is not what teachers have been educated to provide. I educate teachers, who in turn better educate their students. I hold professional learning community meetings with each grade level. Together we design engaging instruction, analyze assessments and design reteaching activities. I will use the core content books as well as the books on differentiation and PLC's to create a collaborative culture and build each teacher's capacity to implement research based strategies deepening the mathematical knowledge of their students.
We will use the office supplies as we engage in professional development as well as help me set up a usable work space that will aid in my productivity in supporting my teachers to provide effective math instruction to all of our students.
Students will emerge this year with more than average growth in Math, as I work with students and their teachers to create the conditions to make it so.
The problem solving skills that math fosters changes the lives of students.
It transfers to all aspects of decision making. Creating an atmosphere where students can learn through exploration and sharing their thinking with others is key in building a problem solving mind.
Students will also be far more willing to continue their education when they are confident in their ability to reason and do not have a fear of mathematics.
