Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students can't clap to keep a beat. For years and after many budget cuts, music and arts programs are severely limited to the point where students have little to no possibility to experience music deeply, much less explore the connection that music and math share.

My students are your typical 6th grade students.

Throughout their elementary school careers, they have not experienced traditional academic success. About one third of my students have some form of learning disability or need. They have a lot of energy, a wonderful sense of curiosity, and an overwhelming need to navigate their learning experiences physically--they learn best when they are out of their seats, which is not usually how they have been taught.

My Project

My students need Bongos and a Rope-Tuned Djembe for math to come to life. My students have a difficult time learning math when it is all just numbers, formulas and rules. As a result, they have become disconnected, thinking that math is all memorization and has little relevance to their lives. I hope to use these drums to explore the ideas of unit rate, ratio and proportion by having students explore the timing of beats per minute in percussion music. They will be able to produce their own sounds, and study the unit rate of beats per minute. The use of percussion instruments like the bongos and the djembe will allow students a real life connection to the relevance of mathematics, and inspire in them the awareness that math is all around them. Once students have this solid foundation, I will have students extend their understanding of unit rate to musical genres of their choice in the form of independent study. The use of instruments like these will also allow us the opportunity to explore a cultural connection to my students cultural heritage.

I believe that exposure to mathematics through music, and specifically, to instruments that allow a direct connection to students' cultures, will empower students, not only to feel confident in their math abilities, but also to feel proud of their cultural heritages.

My students do not readily see themselves reflected in the textbooks they use in school, so learning about math through drumming will open avenues of commonality with mathematics.
