I work with 3rd-5th grade students that qualify for math intervention. In my groups we are focusing on the content standards, as well as the process standards. Although I want them to master the math content, I am really focusing on their thinking skills. Persevering, choosing the correct tools, problem solving, and more! We have a ticket system to reinforce hard work and positive habits of learning. We are focused on the process before the end product. Students have opportunities to earn a ticket each day if they are showing the habits of learners, rather than based on correct answers only. At any time, students who are working extra hard may earn bonus tickets. On Friday, we have a raffle and every student puts all of their tickets in the drawing. If their ticket is pulled, they earn a prize. They can also take do extra practice at home and return it to earn extra tickets. The prize box is getting low, so I am hoping this project will help restock the prize box with engaging rewards.
They are learning responsibility and independence through homework, and there has been a huge increase in participation over just a few months.
The nice thing about this system is that while the students are enjoying it, they are also not guaranteed a prize. So, they are focusing on the process of hard work, and they are rewarded for the process (rather than immediate gratification). My students are thriving, and this small reward system has helped them to have some fun while they enjoy learning!
