This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Nothing is Impossible, the word itself says I'M POSSIBLE," Audrey Hepburn. In math impossible is a word my students use more than I like. I teach them that nothing is impossible if they believe in themselves, set goals and work hard. But they need math supplies to help them achieve those goals.

My students are special needs students with sometimes severe learning disabilities.

I have a mixed group of native English speakers and English language learners. They come from low income households where the support they need is not always readily available. For many of my student's learning stops when they walk out the school doors. To top it off, there are a lot of changes happening in the education world. With those changes it seem as though education is moving forward at a fast pace and lots of kids are either getting left behind or struggling to keep up. I'm a trying to change that for my students.

My Project

While effective whole class instruction is important, for my classroom small group instruction is just as, if not more, important. I am asking for math manipulatives to use in small groups during math lessons to help ease my students into the new expectations of the Common Core Learning Standards. Common Core means that everyone learns the same thing, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they learn it in the same manner. These materials will allow my students to sit in a smaller setting where they can have better access to the information they need to be successful math wizards. They will learn all that they need to not only understand math, but to also be confident enough to explain their thinking to others, allowing for the learning to continue and spread.

Your support of this project will give my students with special needs the chance to use hands-on materials that will help them grow into individuals who tackle math problems with confidence.

Help me erase the connection my students have between the word impossible and math. Thank you for your help!
