Help me give my students an engaging and unique mathematic experience with doodle boards, ten frames, ten frame boards and more! This year, I am planning to fully turn a space in our classroom into what one could only describe as a dream world of mathematic explorations!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Teaching Kindergarten at a Title I school is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my entire life. Each year, I meet a new group of bright young scholars. Fresh to the world of academia. I get to be their introduction to what is possible for the rest of their educational careers. What I love most about my Kindergarteners is their thirst for knowledge, inquiry, and adventure. Furthermore, as they seek to understand the world, they often do so through the means of counting, estimating, building, and more.
For the purpose of this project, I am focusing on a new idea I have for this year: A brand new Math Corner, called "Math-a-paloozaville".
I will turn a corner of the classroom into a nature themed dream world filled with math manipulatives and opportunities. Along with this corner, I have requested a number of math-related class set of materials to provide supportive materials during my whole-group lessons. This project is incredibly important to me as I am aware of the vital need for early mathematic opportunities.
A study published by The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) provides significant insight into the impact high-quality early mathematic experiences have on one's long-term success. The study asks the question, "As our children move toward the day when their decisions will be the ones shaping a new America, will they be equipped with the mathematical and scientific tools needed to meet those challenges and capitalize on those opportunities?” It is my goal to provide the answer to this question the best way I know how, by equipping my students with the tools and materials they require to be their most knowledgeable and confident selves.
