My students are high achievers who come from diverse backgrounds. In my regular education classroom I have 20 first-graders who have diverse learning needs, but for the most part they are bright, curious, hands-on learners. My students thrive and are highly engaged when given hands-on math manipulatives.
This year I would like for my students to have access to hands-on math games to help them increase math fluency for place value and addition strategies as well as understanding geometric concepts.
My Project
Daily my students practice math skills in work stations which focus on--number sense, place value, geometry, and problem solving.
Research proves that playing math games is not only engaging, but also when games are played repeatedly students develop fluency in the skill addressed by the game.
My students thrive in the math stations that have games and provide critical thinking. The build geometry set will provide my students with guided engaging tasks so they can compose and decompose shapes, as well as combine shapes to make new shapes. Teaching addition and subtraction needs to go beyond a worksheet, which is exactly what will happen as my students practice addition with the magnetic adding machine. My students will use the ten frame answer boards to show their work on addition and subtraction tasks. I will also use the boards to help reteach students how to represent and count numbers.
I am the most excited about the Make a Splash 120 chart. Students will use this chart for addition and subtraction strategies, ten more/ten less, as well as understanding place value.
By using these activities students will not only learn to become more fluent mathematicians, but they will also become more efficient problem solvers as they begin to see patterns and work on different strategies to solve problems. Funding this project will provide my students with highly engaging activities for our Math Workstations.
Helping students become more fluent mathematicians and increasing their mathematical confidence, will in turn help them become life long mathematicians.
