My Students

Imagine a math class where vibrant social interactions, creative strategy making, and full focus and participation are abuzz! Such could be the tone of our math classroom, though the school in which I work lacks the resources to secure even the most basic of supplies, let alone enrichment materials.

I teach three ultra-inspiring 7th grade classes in what is considered an 'economically-disadvantaged' urban middle school.

Extra money is not something that my students and their parents/guardians regularly have, if ever. My students love the opportunity to learn through social interaction and become super involved in classwork when the topics are enjoyable and relevant. I have been working for years to bring interesting books, essential supplies, and even personally acquired furniture to my classroom in order to make the environment conducive to curiosity and learning. My students have suggested that board games would make the environment more enjoyable and so here we are!

My Project

The Battleship board game series is relevant to building an understanding of the Cartesian coordinate system, as students navigate using horizontal and vertical coordinate pairs to describe location on a plan. Descartes would be proud of the makers of the game! As such, I imagine students using the game board to gain an enhanced understanding of introductory concepts of navigating the x and y axes, coordinate points, and explorations of dimensional space. I imagine students making new connections in an enjoyable, memorable manner that brings joy back into the math classroom.

When my students have consistent access to basic educational resources that make learning fun, their outlook will be positively affected in that they will be empowered to confidently activate math proficiency.

You will absolutely bring laughter, social engagement, and focused enthusiasm to our math classroom by supporting our project!
