My 7th grade class is so fun and diverse! They come from rural and suburban backgrounds. Majority of the students have been together in school since kindergarten, creating a sense of community where families and teachers all know each other. Many of the teachers in the schools have had students and their siblings, and have been able to gain more insight about their similarities and differences. In addition, teachers have been able to build stronger relationships with families over the years.
My students are ready to work hard, and motivated to take on what the future brings.
They thrive in a challenging classroom in which they have the opportunity to work individually or collaboratively with partners and groups. They show exemplary work to demonstrate their knowledge of the material to the best of their ability. It has been an exciting and fulfilling year so far!
My Project
Common core has encouraged teachers to make a shift in their teaching practices. Instead of rote memorization techniques on a daily basis, students are required to think and demonstrate by thinking through writing and math. To help develop this thinking, materials such as manipulatives, counters, and whiteboards support the development of deep mathematical concepts. These materials provide students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of math in many different ways. Additionally, the use of various materials hone in on each students' different learning styles.
The materials will help to build engagement and collaboration in the classroom.
Students will be able to use other materials such as post-its and pencils to agree or disagree with the thinking of their partners or groups. This opportunity to collaborate in partners and groups will support in developing higher-level thinking for all students, even my English Language Learners. My hope is to increase the opportunities for higher-level thinking and collaboration in class, which will then result in an increase in my students' love for math.
