This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school year started, and my students are working together in groups solving problems and discussing solutions. The teams get the highest score when they give an answer in a complete sentence and with detailed explanation. Computation is the only thing slowing them. They need calculators.

My students are mostly English learners, eighth graders in a public middle school.

Most of them qualify for the federal free meal program in our campus. The majority of them enjoy learning in groups and using technology when it is available. We have some of that technology ready for us, but a class set of basic scientific calculators is something we lack that they could use.

My Project

The new standards of mathematics require that our students use appropriate tools to solve problems and that they become fluent in computational skills. The scientific calculators that we would like to have are the most basic technology tools we can provide for them. Although the calculators do not replace a child's fluency in mathematics, many of our students are turned off in math classes because of their frustration with arithmetic computations. The calculators will help us reduce the frustration and will allow us to focus more on problem solving than computation.

Usually, students are very engaged in the classroom whenever technology is used. Our current society runs on digital devices, and the appropriate use of calculators will prepare our students to be ready for the real world.
