Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a Math Specials K-5 class, so I see over 100 students a day. I love working with all the grade levels. The students are hard working and do their best to reach their goals. I love listening to their math thinking and reasoning. They are such creative thinkers! They develop questions and wonderings that guide their own learning in math each day!
My students enjoy learning math through hands on and engaging activities.
When they work in cooperative groups, I observe how they learn and support one another as well as build a growth mindset. They never give up and work through the greatest challenges which makes them so special!
My Project
Teaching a math class to all the students in the school is rewarding, but what is more rewarding is when they have the essential supplies to contribute to their learning. Whiteboard markers, pencils, and crayons are the most utilized materials in all my classes. Over time, markers dry out, pencils get dull, crayons become overused, and eventually these supplies do not last. Real world problem solving is the main focus in all my math classes. I have my students display their thinking daily on their whiteboards and in their math notebooks. It helps me assess their creative thinking, curiosities, and most exciting, their new invented math strategies! Paper and construction paper are other supplies that are utlized heavily, especially with the younger grades. These materials are used to model mathematics whether it is through drawings, cut and paste activities, or physically making mathematical models.
By having these supplies available, my mathematicians will be able to get the most out their mathematical experiences, and will have the resources necessary to succeed to their fullest.
